ARCHIVED - Largest ship in the world kicks off bumper cruise tourism season in Cartagena
One thousand cruise passengers per day have docked in the Murcia port at the beginning of May
The month of May has taken off to a flying start in Cartagena with a city full of tourists basking in the glorious sunshine, and a triple stop-over of impressive cruise liners drew curious visitors and locals alike to the port.
The first to arrive was the ‘Wonder of the Seas’, the largest luxury ship in the world, capable of carrying 9,000 people in her heyday. On Docking in Murcia, the vessel, due to Covid restrictions, contained a still impressive 3,700 tourists and a crew of 1,500.
Next to dock were the ‘Viking Star’ and the ‘Celebrity Constellation’, carrying more than 1,200 holidaymakers; in all, more than 5,000 tourists docked in the Cartagena port in one morning alone.

These arrivals are just the beginning of what Murcia bars, restaurants and stores hope to be a bumper summer season, as up to 9 different cruises are expected to arrive in the area in the next few days.
It is estimated that some twenty-seven cruise ships with around thirty-five thousand tourists on board will make a stopover in the city throughout the month of May.
Hundreds of onlookers crowded the banks of the port over the weekend to watch the impressive ships dock and their passengers flooded the municipality to enjoy everything Cartagena has to offer.
"The city is very beautiful. And the Mediterranean climate is very pleasant”, one British passenger commented.
