ARCHIVED - Killer whales off the coast of Cartagena!
Exceptional sightings of four specimens near the docks of Escombreras
In what is being described by naturalists as an “exceptional” event, observers on board a zodiac belonging to the Spanish navy dive centre and a boat from the Port Authority of Cartagena have captured images of two killer whales close to the docks of Escombreras in Cartagena.
Pedro García of the naturalists’ association ANSE, who has studied marine mammals along the coastline of Murcia, Almería and Alicante for decades, reports that this is the first ever confirmed sighting of the Orcinus Orca species off the coast of the Region of Murcia, after seeing footage and images of a male killer whale and a cub just a couple of hundred metres from the shore. The whales were first spotted on Wednesday, but were not captured on film until Thursday morning, while it has been confirmed that in total at least four of the species are present in the area.
Researchers in the Strait of Gibraltar have already been contacted to establish whether the male photographed can be identified by means of the markings on his dorsal fin.
Killer whales can grow to a length of 9 metres and weigh up to 5 tons, and unsurprisingly are at the top of the food chain. Their only enemy in the wild is Mankind, and they usually eat fish, squid, seals and other marine mammals, although on occasion groups of them have even been known to attack white sharks!
