Celebrate this year’s Noche de San Juan with a bonfire and party this weekend
For the San Juan festivities in the Mar Menor town of San Pedro del Pinatar this year, a giant wizard sculpture will be ceremoniously sent up in flames on the night of Sunday June 23.
San Juan is a big deal in Spain, with bonfires often being lit on the beaches, fireworks set off and verbenas (street parties) held all through the night. In some places there is even a tradition of going swimming in the sea at night, though this can sometimes be dangerous.
The night of San Juan is closely linked to the summer solstice, which falls on Thursday June 20 this year. Since ancient times, this event has been considered conducive to magic rituals and celebrations.
The great sorcerer who will be casting a spell over San Pedro del Pinatar this year is available to see right now in the car park on Avenida Doctor Artero Guirao.
It is a large sculpture made by master ‘falleros’, who create the statues or ‘fallas’ for the Fallas fireworks festival in Valencia.
