Bill Charlap, one of the most admired pianists within jazz circles, returns to the San Javier Jazz Festival with his mix of recycled standards and delicious bop and hard bop. During his career he has played with giants such as Tony Bennett, Clark Terry, Gerry Mulligan, Phil Woods and Sheila Jordan, among many others, and was the recipient of the Jazz Journalist Association's 2003 Jazz Pianist of the Year award. He is now Director of Jazz Studies at William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey.
His wonderful album with Tony Bennett “The Silver Lining: the songs of Jerome Kern” gives great sentimental value to his visit to the festival, after the singer’s death last year, and the album sits alongside those that Tony recorded with Bill Evans in the 70s as one of the best that the legendary singer recorded in his entire career. At the same time, it marks one of the milestones in Bill Charlap's fantastic discography.
