ARCHIVED - Janssen vaccines on their way to the Spanish regions following EMA go-ahead
Spain’s first 146,000 doses of the new coronavirus vaccine had been sitting in storage for a week while the authorities deliberated on its safety.
The Spanish Health Ministry has given the order for the first batch of the single-dose vaccine against Covid-19, which arrived in the country last week, to be sent out to the regions today (Wednesday 21 April), following an announcement on Tuesday by the European Medicines Agency (EMA), which has decided that the vaccine’s benefits far outweigh its risks.
The US suspended the administration of the vaccine last Wednesday as a precaution following reports of blood clots in eight patients who had received it, out of a total of seven million.
Johnson&Johnson, the pharmaceutical company that produces the vaccine, decided to put European distributions on hold while the matter was considered.
In the meantime, Spain put the 146,000 doses it received last week, the first of 300,000 due to arrive this month, on ice rather than sending them out to the regions for administration to patients aged between 70 and 79 as planned.
Now, however, the EMA has concluded, in a similar fashion to its decision a few weeks ago regarding the vaccine by AstraZeneca, that there may well be "possible links" to "rare" and "infrequent" cases of blood clots, but that the "general benefits" of the vaccine against Covid "far outweigh the risks" of this adverse effect.
Following this announcement, Spanish Health Minister Carolina Darias said that the distribution of the 146,000 doses of the vaccine will now go ahead.
The vaccines are now on their way to the autonomous regions and will be distributed to the same age group as those receivig the AstraZeneca, which until things change yet again, is the 60-69 age group which is considered to be at far lower risk of clotting than other age groups.
