Isla Plana sea turtle finally lays eggs after three years of failed attempts

There was much celebration in Cartagena on Tuesday July 4 when a loggerhead turtle, affectionately known as Borgia, successfully laid 117 eggs on Isla Plana after three years without the endangered species procreating in the Region of Murcia.

An excited beachgoer spotted the sea turtle shortly after dawn and called the emergency services and experienced staff from the El Valle Wildlife Recovery Centre rushed to the coast to confirm that Borgia had indeed nested. And it was no easy feat, since she happened to choose a particularly hard spot with layers of gravel and stones.

Several of the eggs were taken to the recovery centre to undergo artificial incubation to ensure the survival of the species and the rest of the nest was moved to a safer spot on a secluded beach in the Calblanque regional park.

Tough lessons have been learned along the Mediterranean coast this summer, and one Torrevieja sea turtle refused to lay her eggs when she was accosted by curious tourists, so every care is being taken to ensure these young successfully hatch.

The excitement didn’t end with Borgia, however, as volunteers from the Turtle Territory of the Region of Murcia discovered more tracks on the very same beach where her eggs were transferred to.

This same summer there have also been several spawning attempts on the coasts of the Region, specifically on some of the beaches of La Manga that overlook the Mediterranean and also in Águilas.

Prior to this year, loggerhead turtles last nested in La Manga del Mar Menor and Cala Honda in Lorca in 2020. Before this, successful spawnings were recorded in Cala Arturo in Cartagena in 2019.
