ARCHIVED - Illegal land clearance reported in the mountains between Lorca and Águilas
Unauthorized land use is not restricted to the Campo de Cartagena according to the IU party
The recent rapid deterioration in the marine environment of the Mar Menor has placed the issue of illegal farming practices very much in the spotlight in the Region of Murcia, with the use of fertilizers containing nitrates being held largely responsible for the runoff of harmful substances into the lagoon during times of heavy rain, but an incident in the Sierra de Almenara in the south-west of the Region illustrates the fact that unscrupulous agriculturalists (and property developers) are unfortunately by no means limited to the fields of the Campo de Cartagena.
According to the IU political party in the municipality of Lorca, a large plot of land has been ploughed and prepared for the cultivation of crops in an area which is both a Site of Community Importance and a ZEPA birdlife protection zone. At the same time it is reported that a “rambla” natural runoff channel) has been blocked close to the Lorca-Águilas motorway, in the rural district of Purias, and the heavy machinery used is said to have brought about the destruction of the natural vegetation, which is home to the spur-thighed tortoise (a protected species which lives in the wild in south-west Murcia).
Councillor Pedro Sosa reports that between 6,000 and 7,000 square metres of land are involved, and that the area enjoys spectacular views over the Guadalentín valley and the mountains to the north - the implication being that the land could have been prepared as the site of a residential construction development - while calling on the council Departments of Urbanismo and the Environment to take action.
In response, councillor José Luis Ruiz remarks that although the Town Hall can report such practices it is the responsibility of environmental officers and the Seprona wildlife protection wing of the Guardia Civil to take appropriate steps.
