ARCHIVED - Huge beams arrive in Lorca for construction of a new V-shaped road bridge
The bridge over the River Guadalentín will be the first of its kind in the regional road network of Murcia
Work is under way in the city of Lorca to build the first V-shaped road bridge in the regional road network of Murcia, crossing the bed of the River Guadalentín and joining the San Diego district in the east with the Avenida Santa Clara which skirts the historic city centre.
The bridge forms part of the second phase of the project to build the “Ronda Central”, which is designed to ease traffic congestion in Lorca, costing a total of 3.6 million euros. The 116-metre structure requires the laying of four main sections, each measuring 33.5 metres and weighing some 180 tons, and four more which come in at 22.5 metres long and 160 tons in weight, providing 5-metre-wide road surfaces.
There will be just one central support for this important infrastructure, and the first of the huge beams needed has now arrived in Lorca from the province of Cádiz, where it was made, following a complex and at times spectacular transport operation which necessitated the closure of various roads during Wednesday night and the early hours of Thursday morning. The other beams will be arriving during the next few weeks before they are put together “like a giant puzzle”, in the words of Enrique Ujaldón, general secretary of the Development and Infrastructures department of the regional government of Murcia.
When complete – before the summer, according to the schedule - it is forecast that the new bridge will not only reduce the amount of traffic on Avenida de Europe and Avenida Juan Carlos I, but will also make the main roads of Lorca safer and enhance the flow of traffic during episodes of heavy rain. Other elements included in the second phase of the Ronda Central project include a roundabout at the junction with the Camino de Cartagena and the installation of 40 LED streetlights and almost 200 trees alongside the road.
