ARCHIVED - Highest daily Covid death toll in Spain since April with 591 fatalities
The 14-day incidence rate reaches another new record high
The latest daily coronavirus update published by Spain’s Ministry of Health on Tuesday reports another 591 fatalities related to the pandemic, the highest figure for a single day since the peak of the first wave in April.
At the same time a further 36,435 cases have been confirmed, taking the total since the first were detected a year ago to over 2.6 million, and the 14-day accumulated incidence rate in Spain again rose to a new record high at 894 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The 7-day rate is currently 421, almost exactly the same as in the previous daily report, and while there are hopes that this may indicate that the upward curve since December is finally being flattened out the figures are still alarmingly high: the threshold above which the situation is categorized as being of “extreme risk” is set at 250 over a 14-day period.
Only in the Canaries is the current rate below that threshold at 189, while the highest figures are those calculated in the regions of the Comunidad Valenciana (1,423), Murcia (1,382), Castilla y León (1,377) and La Rioja (1,300). However, the latest set of data do at least show slight decreases in Catalunya, the Balearics, Extremadura, Cantabria, the Canaries, the Basque Country and Andalucía.
Meanwhile, the critical situation in hospitals all over the country continues to worsen. The proportion of hospital beds occupied by Covid patients now stands at 24.1 per cent and in intensive care units the equivalent figure is 41.3 per cent, while in the Comunidad Valenciana, Castilla-La Mancha, Madrid, Melilla and La Rioja the numbers rise to over 50 per cent.
