High-speed rail link between Lorca and Vera approved by the Spanish government
The €108 million project will cover 61.5 kilometres and four stations, bringing Murcia closer to Andalucía

The Spanish Council of Ministers has officially authorised the contract to build the high-speed rail (AVE) line between Lorca and Vera. The project, led by the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, comes with a budget of €108 million and follows ongoing works between Murcia and Lorca.
Francisco Lucas, the Government Delegate in Murcia, announced the approval on Tuesday February 17, at the Real Casino in Murcia city. He described the project as “a significant advance in restoring the Region’s rail link with Andalucía, a connection that Murcians have long requested.”

The new section stretches for 61.5 kilometres and includes four stations: Puerto Lumbreras, Almendricos, Pulpí, and Vera-Almanzora. Adif AV will tender the contract and is already managing other parts of the Murcia-Almería high-speed line. Last year, contracts were awarded for the Vera-Almería stretch (68 kilometres) and the Nonduermas-Lorca San Diego section (57.5 kilometres).

Work on the Lorca-Vera section will see the full railway line and its four stations take shape, with Adif AV already securing the materials and contracts needed to complete the corridor to Almería. Electrification is also moving ahead, including the construction of the Totana substation and the overhead power lines, while advanced signalling and communication systems are being installed to make the line safe, modern, and ready for high-speed trains.

Lucas also spoke about what this project means for the Region of Murcia overall. He detailed the government’s new financing plan, which could bring an extra €1.2 billion a year to the Region to support local industry, improve infrastructure, and strengthen public services. Basically, this rail link, once completed, will have a big impact on Murcia’s economy.
