ARCHIVED - Golden eagle injured by power line rescued in Alhama de Murcia
The poor animal, which had a wounded wing, was spotted by a member of the public
Thanks to the collaboration of ordinary citizens, the Guardia Civil police of the Region of Murcia has located and recovered a beautiful golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) in Alhama de Murcia which was suffering from serious injuries.
It was originally a local who alerted the Civil Guard to the presence of a bird, apparently an eagle, which was injured in the vicinity of the RM-23 road, in the municipality of Alhama de Murcia.
They sent out a patrol of the Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA) to the area, who swiftly located the bird and verified that it was a golden eagle with a nasty wound on its right wing.
They managed to capture the animal and transfer it to the Wildlife Recovery Centre of El Valle, in Murcia, for treatment so that it could recover and be returned to its natural habitat.
The 'El Valle' Wildlife Recovery Centre is funded by the ERDF Region of Murcia Operational Program 2014-2020.
From the look of the golden eagle’s wing wound, it is presumed that it was caused by a collision with a power line. Such collisions kill and injure dozens of birds every year.
The area where the golden eagle was recovered was in the Saladares del Guadalentín, classified as a Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA) and Site of Community Interest (SCI).
The golden eagle is a species that is included in the Red Book of Spanish Birds, is catalogued as “near threatened” and appears in the List of Wild Species under Special Protection Regime.
