ARCHIVED - Five loggerhead turtles returned to the sea in La Manga del Mar Menor
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
The young marine animals are part of a cluster of eggs laid last year in the Region of Murcia
Five baby loggerhead turtles were returned to the Mediterranean Sea in La Manga del Mar Menor this Wednesday October 20, after being incubated in the Centro de Recuperación de Fauna Silvestre de la Comunidad 'El Valle' and cared for in the IMIDA marine facilities in San Pedro del Pinatar.
These young marine animals were part of the cluster of 102 eggs which were laid in La Manga during the summer of 2020, which is only the second documented lot of eggs laid in the Region of Murcia. Other members of this cluster were released into the wild earlier this year in September.
During their stay in captivity, the turtles have been fitted with a microchip which will allow them to be identified if they are caught in the future, as well as allowing experts to gather data about the migratory movements of this species and any global threats that they may face.
The loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) has been classified as vulnerable in Spain since 2011 and the International Union for Nature Conservation (UICN) includes this species on its list of endangered animals.
