ARCHIVED - Fishermen call for fish farming rethink after winter storms destroy enclosures
Escaped sea bass and bream bring market prices down and threaten other species
Following the damage done to various of the fish farm enclosures off the coastline of Murcia in recent months, firstly during the severe “gota fría” storm of last September and then in a second gota fría in December and as a result of Storm Gloria in January, the fishermen’s guild of Cartagena is reported in La Opinión this week to be advocating a policy whereby such establishments are located in more sheltered areas where they are not so vulnerable to high waves and gale-force winds.
Bartolomé Navarro of the Cartagena guild asserts that the enclosures off the coast of San Pedro del Pinatar, being in open sea, are over-exposed to stormy conditions, and should instead be located in less risky areas, as well as advocating legislation to impose tighter controls over their moorings.
It has already been reported in recent weeks that when the enclosures in El Gorguel were damaged the escape of millions of sea bass and gilthead bream provoked a bonanza for shoreline anglers and, as a result of over-supply, market prices plummeted, depriving the “legitimate” fishermen of revenue. At the same time, though, Sr Navarro explains that the escaped fish are voracious feeders, particularly the sea bass, and consumer other small fish and the eggs of larger ones, reducing the supply of other species such as hake and red mullet.
