ARCHIVED - First AVE high-speed train arrives in the Region of Murcia as tracks are tested
Passenger services are expected to reach the city of Murcia in mid-2021
After many years of waiting trainspotters finally had an opportunity to see one of the AVE high-speed trains in the Region of Murcia on Tuesday when the station of Beniel, 15 kilometres east of the regional capital on the boundary with the province of Alicante, welcomed a train using the newly laid tracks as a rest stop before turning around and heading back towards the Costa Blanca.
Testing has now begun on the stretch of line between Monforte del Cid and Beniel in order for services to reach Orihuela within a few months, after the overhead cables and other infrastructures were tested earlier in the year by one of the “laboratory” AVE trains. On Tuesday, though, the train used was one of those which will be carrying passengers on the part of the network which is currently expected to reach the city of Murcia in the summer of 2021.
At one point when the arguments over how the AVE line should enter the city of Murcia (over or under the ground) seemed interminable it was proposed that Beniel should serve as an outlying station for the regional capital in the meantime, but the rail company Adif maintained that the station is not in a fit state to offer its services to the high-speed trains.
