ARCHIVED - Electricity outage leaves more than 120,000 people without power in Murcia
The outage in the Region of Murcia lasted more than an hour and a half
A blackout on Saturday, July 24 left more than 120,000 residents of over 20 municipalities in the Region of Murcia on a day when the thermometers topped 40 degrees in many areas. The outage wasn’t just confined to the Costa Cálida but also affected Madrid, Catalonia, Andalusia, Aragon, Navarre, the Basque Country, Extremadura and Castilla y León, according to sources from the company Red Eléctrica Española.
The Emergency Coordination Centre 112 reported that the breakdown, which occurred at about half past four in the afternoon, originated on a 400,000 high voltage line. According to Red Eléctrica, the situation was resolved around an hour and a half later.
Given that much of the Region was on an orange alert for extreme temperatures, disgruntled customers took to social media in their droves to complain about the heat and the lack of power to run their air-con units. The Emergency Coordination Centre confirmed that they received more than 200 calls about the outage, and that Cartagena, Mazarrón, Beniel, Cehegín, Caravaca de la Cruz, Fortuna, Mula, Pliego, Abanilla, Moratalla, Santomera, Fuente Álamo, Torre Pacheco and La Unión were some of the areas worst affected.
