Spain is ending August with what meteorologist Evelio Gómez describes as a very changeable and unpredictable weather situation. Several regions were hit by storms earlier in the week and since Wednesday August 26, a new Atlantic low pressure system has brought fronts along with a mass of colder air sweeping in.

 

Temperatures have already dropped sharply in the west and centre of the country, and that trend is expected to reach eastern Spain on Friday August 28. The start of the weekend will also bring another weather feature to contend with, a plume of Saharan dust currently hanging over the Mediterranean, which is gradually shifting towards the southeast of the country.

 

It's the combination of this dust with rain forecast for the same day that's likely to cause problems. Southeastern Spain, specifically eastern Almería, the Region of Murcia and the province of Alicante, is expected to see rain on Friday, and with dust particles already suspended in the air, that could easily translate into the dreaded mud rain many residents will be all too familiar with.

 

Friday "might not be the best day to wash your car in these areas," Mr Gómez quipped.

 

The heaviest rain is expected in the northwest of the country, particularly in Galicia and the province of Pontevedra, with further rain likely in Asturias, western Castillu León, and provinces including Cáceres and Guadalajara.

 

By the weekend though, the rain should ease off across most of the country, and temperatures are expected to climb back up again.
