Dozens of fuel jerrycans found near abandoned Puerto Mayor buildings in La Manga

San Javier Local Police say the containers are tied to an ongoing pattern of fuel smuggling for drug trafficking boats

San Javier Local Police discovered dozens of jerrycans full of petrol piled up near the abandoned Puerto Mayor facilities in La Manga del Mar Menor on Sunday September 20, in a find officers have linked to a Guardia Civil operation carried out in the area earlier that week.

Finds like this have become more frequent along the Region of Murcia's coastline in recent months, as fuel caches of this kind are increasingly tied to drug trafficking activity in the area.

The information gathered by local police in San Javier was passed on to the Guardia Civil station in Cabo de Palos, which has taken charge of the investigation and is now carrying out the necessary enquiries to establish exactly what happened.

The Guardia Civil has carried out several operations in recent years targeting criminal groups that supply fuel to the speedboats and dinghies making the crossing from North Africa.

These fuel smuggling networks have become a key part of the supply chain for traffickers operating in regional waters, keeping speedboats quickly topped up as they move along the coast. In this case, the jerrycans were discovered during routine surveillance and security patrols in La Manga.

In a statement, San Javier Local Police explained that the find underlines the importance of cooperation between different law enforcement agencies in keeping residents and visitors safe.
