ARCHIVED - Direct democracy in Aguilas: have your say on what happens to the Casa Ruano
The Casa Ruano is one of Águilas’s most emblematic buildings, and now local people are being given the chance to decide the future of this historical monument
Águilas Town Council has launched a campaign of public participation for local residents to be able to decide what to do with the ‘Casa Ruano’ building, consisting of a survey to allow people to have their say on what should happen to the local landmark.
The emblematic building, located in the Plaza de España, was recently acquired by the Town Hall with the intention of carrying out a comprehensive conservation-rehabilitation project given its historical and architectural interest.
For this project, the Town Council intends to compete for the European Union Next Generation Funds via the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda within the Programme for the Rehabilitation of Public Buildings, part of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
The property has an impressive 1,265 square metres and was built in 1883 by the architect Justo Millán, commissioned by the Ruano y Blázquez family, important landowners in Murcia in the late 19th century. In terms of style and chronology, it corresponds to a moderate eclecticism and can be related to the first forms of geometric modernism.
The aim of the recently launched survey is to determine what use should be made of the building, which is classified as one of the few buildings of noble origin still preserved in the town. To this end, the Town Council is inviting anyone resident in Águilas to fill in a simple questionnaire, which they say will be key to finding out the needs of the townspeople of Águilas and their opinion on the uses to which the building could be put.
