ARCHIVED - Crowds to return to football stadiums in Spain
Capacity levels will be determined by Spain's 17 regional governments.
In a boost for the Spanish football league (La Liga) and fans alike, the government has announced that the public will be allowed to return to stadiums across the country next season after lifting a ban on crowds.
The exact capacity allowed in each stadium will be determined by regional authorities, with some restrictions still possible, particularly in the north of Spain, revealed Minister of Health, Carolina Darias today, Thursday, June 24.
"We can return let's say to normality in terms of fans being allowed into stadiums," she said, adding that the "joyous news for sport in Spain" also applies to basketball venues.
The move is an important one for the La Liga clubs, which have been hit hard financially by the pandemic, with league president Javier Tebas saying earlier this week he anticipates stadiums will be at least 70 per cent full at the start of the season in August.
Fans were allowed to return for the last two rounds of La Liga last season in five regions with a 30 per cent capacity and maximum of 5,000 people, and a third of normal tickets are being sold for the Euro 2020 matches being hosted by Spain in Seville at La Cartuja stadium.
Today's lifting of the fan ban was announced during a press conference after an extraordinary meeting of the Council of Ministers, in which mandatory mask wearing outdoors was also withdrawn from June 26, except where there are crowds or the safety distance cannot be maintained.
As such, masks must be worn in outdoor stadiums if the distance of 1.5 metres isn't possible.
In the next few days the Minister of Transport, José Luis Ábalos, plans to put forward proposals to the Council of Ministers to modify airport entry limitations in Spain.
The intention is to make these measures more flexible and allow more people to enter airports.
At the moment, only people with a ticket to travel, the State Security Forces and Corps and personnel working at the airports are allowed to enter.
