ARCHIVED - Crime wave: why are people stealing chlorine tablets from Murcia fountains?
Public fountains in Murcia are being deprived of their cleaning tablets, and other “potentially dangerous” behaviour that happens on an almost daily basis
Public workers have been busy cleaning and clearing the fountains around Murcia, but have been dismayed by a bizarre and seemingly very specific series of crimes that is being committed not by one, but by many disparate people.
The chlorine tablets that are used to disinfect the fountains are disappearing within a few minutes of being placed there, just as soon as the fountain workers depart.
“It happens to us often,” explained José Luis Ródenas, the head of concessionary company STV Gestión, “they have got the hang of us and they don’t hesitate to get into the fountain to get hold of the tablet.”
The reason for this filching of chlorine tablets is mainly because of the price, which, like many other raw materials, has risen. Chlorine tablets are expensive, and as well as being used in fountains, ordinary people can use them in their swimming pools.
Other dangerous and silly behaviour in Murcia’s fountains
This is by no means the only illegal or careless behaviour happening in public fountains around the Region, especially those that are more hidden or less accessible.
People regularly wash their clothes, dishes, and even bathe themselves in the fountain water, which contaminates the water as the detergent totally cancels out the effect of the chlorine.
Last year, one man decided to cool himself in a public fountain in the Plaza de los Apóstoles in Murcia capital as if it were a jacuzzi, and others use the fountain in the Salitre garden, which is down some stairs and therefore not visible to passers-by, to do their washing.
All the fountains and ponds are monitored almost daily by taking readings of the different parameters (in addition to chlorine, the pH of the water, for example), which are analysed each month in the offices to check the level of pollution in the water, and make sure it has enough chlorine and not too much soap or shampoo.
