An average of 175 crimes were committed every day in the Region of Murcia in the first quarter of the year, according to government statistics, following a 22% rise in burglaries, thefts and assaults.

Between January and the end of March, the State Security Forces registered 15,801 criminal offences and misdemeanors in the Region, significantly higher than last year when anti-Covid restrictions contributed to the lowest crime figures in recent times.

But whilst there has been a notable rise, the spike is lower than the national increase of 27%.

What is a concern is the fact that violent robberies rose by 57% in the first quarter of 2022, from 276 during the same period last year to 439.

House burglaries increased by 11.1%, mainly in Murcia city where there were 314, followed by Cartagena (118) and Lorca (49). Vehicle thefts increased by 30.5% with 167 reports.

Another of the crimes that rose significantly were murders and attempted murders. A dozen of the latter were investigated – five more than a year earlier – and there were three murders, one more than in the first quarter of 2021.

On the flip side, after several years of rising figures, reported sexual offences decreased slightly by 5.7%. Between January and March, 132 cases were reported in the Region, which is still more than one every day on average.

According to the Interior report, police investigated up to 16 sexual assaults with penetration – the same as the previous year.
