ARCHIVED - Covid rate in Murcia ten times lower than in Madrid; Covid update April 19
More than half of the municipalities in the Murcia region are below the level at which the virus is considered to be under control.
The feared fourth wave is showing little sign of life in the Murcia region at the moment and the number of new cases diagnosed on Sunday was only 12, according to the regional health authority report on Monday April 19.
Data at a glance as reported on Monday 19th April 2021 (relating to Sunday April 18 at 23:59):
New cases reported in the last 24 hours: 12
Confirmed cases since the outbreak of the pandemic: 109,755
Active cases: 513
Patients in home isolation with mild symptoms: 434
Hospital patients: 79
Patients in ICU: 17
Total cured: 107,658
Total deaths: 1,584
There are now only 513 active cases in the region, 434 of which are in home isolation, and 79 hospitalised. The number in intensive care has now dropped to 17 patients.
There were no fatalities on Sunday and only 5 in all of last week.
This is a clear improvement from last weekend when the Sunday figures showed 634 active cases, 85 in hospital and 30 in intensive care.
The figures published on a Monday are always different to those during the week as there are less staff working, so less PCR tests and less data entered into the system, but the level of cases is still considerably lower than elsewhere in the country and Murcia remains the second-best performing region of the 17 autonomous regions of Spain.
Accumulated incidence rate
The overall accumulated incidence rate for the Murcia region based on these latest figures is 70 cases per 100,000, second only to the Valencia region which was at 36 according to the last national figures which were published on Friday.
At that point the national average had climbed back up to 213, so this Monday Murcia has only a third as many cases as the average across Spain. On Friday Navarra was at the top of the list with 443 cases per 100,000, followed by Madrid at 372, or 10 times more cases per 100,000 of population than Murcia.
25 of the 45 municipalities in the region are below the level of 50 cases per 100,000 over 14 days, which is the level at which the virus is considered to be under control.
The only municipality which is distorting the accumulated incidence rate of the region is Puerto Lumbreras, which remains in confinement this week and is reporting 513 cases per 100,000 of population.
The second highest level is in Ricote, which is at 159 cases per 100,000, but as the population is only 1253 residents, this translates into only two cases reported in the last 14 days; Lorqui which has a rate of 151 is in a similar position, its population is 7246 and in the last 14 day period 11 cases have been reported.
Below that are three more populous municipalities, which have higher levels of incidence; San Pedro del Pinatar with 151(17 cases in 14 days), Torre Pacheco with 137 (22 cases) and Cieza with 133 (24 cases).
Although the situation in Murcia remains stable, the health authorities continue to warn that “the situation can change at any minute” and this week the vaccination campaign continues in earnest, with the health authority hoping to vaccinate 70,000 people in the mass vaccinations scheduled this week.
The stocks of the regional health authority will be boosted by the delivery of 31,000 Pfizer doses this week and 11,000 AstraZeneca.
