ARCHIVED - Courts approve restrictions on events in the Jardín de Floridablanca in Murcia
Festive celebrations are to be limited in the oldest public park in Spain
Huermur, a platform group which lobbies constantly of the preservation and protection of items of natural and cultural heritage in and around the city of Murcia, is celebrating a decision in the regional high court this week which effectively bans the holding of activities in the urban park and garden of Floridablanca on the southern side of the River Segura in the regional capital.
The Jardín de Floridablanca is said by many to be the first public garden opened in Spain. Its origins lie in the 18th century and it is named after José Moñino Redondo, a politician, lawyer and economist who became a member of the Council of Castilla and Spanish Ambassador to Rome: a statue of the Count stands in the park to commemorate the achievements of one of Murcia’s most prestigious sons.
This historic leisure area close to the centre of the city has played host to important fairs and festivities in the past, and is now one of the central features of the Barrio del Carmen next to the church of the same name, including some spectacular large trees with a presence that only age can bring.
But when the park was declared an Item of Cultural Interest in 2017 at the instigation of Huermur a clause was included which the platform group says gave the Town Hall and the Culture department of the regional government “carte blanche” to hold any activity they wanted in it, under the umbrella of “traditional cultural activities”. This clause has now been revoked by the court, and as a result in future the festivities held there will be more severely limited in order to avoid the deterioration of the unique environment it provides in the centre of Murcia.
In celebrating the decision Huermur also call on the Town Hall to provide an alternative venue for the events which will now not be permitted in the park, rather than constantly holding inappropriate celebrations in Floridablanca, the botanical garden of the Paseo del Malecón and the Plaza Belluga in front of Murcia cathedral.
