Corvera Airport sees strong start to 2025 with rise in passengers and flights

A significant portion of this growth was driven by international travellers. The international market accounted for 24,097 passengers in January, marking an impressive 16.8% increase from the previous year.
Meanwhile, the domestic commercial market also saw a rise, with 6,003 passengers recorded, representing a 6.3% year-on-year growth.
In addition to the rise in passenger numbers, the airport also experienced a notable 25.7% increase in flight operations. A total of 347 movements were recorded in January – perhaps a sign of the growing confidence that airlines are beginning to have in Corvera Airport as a profitable flight destination all year round?
Despite these positive figures, passenger numbers remain significantly lower than pre-pandemic levels. In January 2020, the airport recorded 2,725 domestic passengers and 64,845 international passengers – almost double the figures seen this year.
Similarly, the number of flights has not yet returned to 2020 levels, with 105 domestic flights and 480 international flights recorded that January, marking a 40% decrease in comparison to 2025.
Summer flight schedule on the horizon
The winter flight schedule at Corvera Airport comes to an end in late March, when the airport will once again welcome an expanded summer roster of flights, potentially bringing further increases in passenger traffic.
However, uncertainty remains regarding the continuation of flights to Madrid and Barcelona, which were introduced by Volotea in December 2023 as part of a government-backed agreement with the Region of Murcia. The airline’s website currently lists ticket availability for these routes only until March 3, 2025, for Madrid and May 28, 2025, for Barcelona.
Volotea, which had a record-breaking year in 2024 with an estimated €35 million in profits, is now preparing to go public on the stock market. The company has indicated that it will only continue operating these Madrid and Barcelona routes if demand proves sufficient and they remain financially viable.
Still, the strong initial figures for 2025 spell good news for Corvera Airport, which for so long has seen disappointing figures, and airport management and tourist sector businesses are cautiously optimistic for a promising year ahead.
