ARCHIVED - Collection of model 18th century ships goes on display at the Museo Naval in Cartagena
Julio Castelo Marín took up modelling after retiring 20 years ago!
On Friday 21st January a new permanent exhibition was opened for the first time at the Museo Naval in Cartagena containing 40 painstakingly built scale models of 18th century ships.
The models in the Sala Peral are the work of Julio Castelo Matrán and have been ceded to the museum in Cartagena by the Fundación Mapfre for permanent display. Among the boats re-created by the craftsman are many of the best-known in Spain between the 18th and 20th centuries: as well as the Spanish navy vessels from six other European nations and the USA are also included.
Julio Castelo Matrán took up model ship building when he retired and has since completed 94 projects over the last 20 years. It was his wife who sparked his enthusiasm with a retirement gift, and with over 3,000 pieces included in each model he has become remarkably skilled at his hobby, completing each ship in just three or four months.
Among his favourites are the Juan Sebastián Elcano – his first model and the sailing vessel which is used by the Spanish navy as a training vessel – and the Santísima Trinidad, an 18th century galleon which was a particularly complicated project due to the extensive sails and the 140 cannon on board. The ship was the heaviest armed in the world at the time she was re-fitted in 1802 but was sunk at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.
The Naval Museum in Cartagena is in the CIM building at the western end of the seafront on Paseo Alfonso XII, having occupied new premises in 2012. Originally the building was constructed between 1776 and 1785 as a prison and lodgings for felons and convicted criminals, but the new museum premises are thoroughly modern and contain a wide range of exhibits with informative panels displayed in both Spanish and well translated English.
Admission is free (although a voluntary donation of 3 euros is encouraged and seems eminently reasonable) and the museum is open from Tuesday to Saturday between 10.00 and 14.00.
