Murcia farms that don’t comply with Mar Menor protection measures will be denied irrigation for their crops
Properties in the Campo de Cartagena have been given until August to prove they are complying with the protection measures for the region’s aquifer or risk having their water supply cut off by the Segura Hydrographic Confederation (CHS).Farmers in Cartagena will have to provide evidence that they are not contributing harmful nitrates to the Quaternary and Andalucían aquifers if they are to remain connected to the Tajo-Segura Transfer, along with its vital desalination and water treatment plants. Irrigators in this area are subject to tight restrictions on the use of fertilisers due to their proximity to the Mar Menor. The CHS has advised that the reports from farmers “will be resolved in strict order of entry” and once “it is verified by the competent administration that the documentation is correct, the irrigation will be authorized."Any attempts to falsify reports will be considered a civil infraction and could even lead to a criminal case, but given the enormous amount of work that has to be done in a short period of time, many farmers in Cartagena now fear that their water supply will be cut off, further jeopardising this year’s harvest. For irrigators that fail to prove their compliance with the protection measures, their water supply will be interrupted come August.Just this week, the Superior Court of Justice in Murcia overturned a decision allowing for "accidental discharges" as the CHS runs irrigation water to farms in the Campo de Cartagena through the Rambla de Albujon.Image: Archive
