The City Council of Cartagena has agreed this week to urge the Spanish government to abolish tolls on the stretch of the AP-7 motorway which connects the port city with Alicante and Vera, one of the last sections of road that carry a charge between the Costa del Sol and the French border.

Last September, the tolls were removed from the motorway linking Tarragona and La Junquera in the province of Girona, meaning that drivers could travel from Murcia and Alicante to France almost for free.

However, the Cartagena council is dissatisfied that “the inhabitants of Campo de Cartagena are the only ones condemned to pay tolls on the A7” on the remaining stretch, and has demanded that the central government address this “injustice” by deciding on the appropriate means to eliminate both tolls as soon as possible.

Spokesperson José López went so far as to accuse the government of Spain of discriminating against the inhabitants of the Region, and suggested that while the administration is reaching a definitive solution, a budget should be made available to adopt concessions for the motorway use, just as was done with the AP-9.

Independent councillor Gonzalo Abad believes that “it would be very good if these tolls were abolished, like the rest that remain in Spain”, yet the government, on the whole, remains opposed, and the Councillor for the Treasury, Esperanza Nieto, is equally sceptical, pointing out that a request to raise the toll on the AP-7 within the municipality while the road between Isla Plana and La Azohía is closed, was ignored.
