Carlos Alcaraz beats Djokovic to win Wimbledon

Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz from Murcia has won the Wimbledon men’s singles final 2023 against Novak Djokovic, and recovering the men's title for a Spanish player for the first time since Rafael Nadal last won in 2010.

After losing the first set, Alcaraz came back to win 1-6, 7-6(6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 in a match that was frequently heart stopping and breathtakingly intense.

Alcaraz was number 1 seed for Wimbledon after winning the Queens championship last month, while Djokovic, who has won Wimbledon seven times, was seeded 2.

Carlos Alcaraz has cemented his place on the world stage of tennis at the age of just 20, and had already become world number 1 when he was just 19 years old. He has also put Spain’s oft-overlooked Region of Murcia firmly on the map, promoting his home region in his games by drawing and writing about its charms on the cameras.

Meanwhile, in the under 18s category, UK player Henry Searle has become the first British Wimbledon boys’ champion since 1962 (when the trophy was taken by Stanley Matthews Junior, the son of the legendary footballer!), and may be a name to watch in the future as potential competition for Alcaraz.
