Caravaca de la Cruz becomes the sixth place in Spain to receive Golden Spike
It recognises the superior geological status of the region of Murcia worldwide
This Saturday November 9, Caravaca de la Cruz became the sixth place in Spain to have the so-called 'Golden Spike' in recognition of its superior geological status worldwide.
Golden Spikes are markers that signify a stratotype section and global boundary point, or GSSP. GSSPs are stratigraphic sections chosen by international agreement that serve as a reference or type locality for a certain boundary on the international stratigraphic scale.
In March 2023, the International Union of Geological Sciences ratified the concession to Caravaca of the Global Stratotype of the Hauterivian-Barremian Boundary (Lower Cretaceous, about 126 million years ago) to a section of the ravine of the Argos River channel.
In the Argos River, a layer of earth is preserved that allows people to know the geological time of our planet and to make the International Chronostratigraphic Table.
The ceremony to lay the Golden Spike was attended by representatives of the international organisations that have awarded this distinction.
The Councillor for the Environment at Caravaca Town Hall, Ana Belén Martínez, has emphasised that "the Golden Spike ceremony is a scientific and social event without parallel in the Region of Murcia, as there are only five such places in the entire country."
