Camposol Groups get green light to move facilities onto Council land
Mazarrón Council agree to the transfer of multiple facilities currently on private land onto council controlled areas
For many years, various Camposol groups have made use of undeveloped polígonos and plots to install sports, gardens and community facilities for the local population to enjoy and socialise. But as the council, in answer to residents’ demands, start the process of taking responsibility for the completion of the urbanisation, owners of private building plots where the facilities are in place have begun to clear and level the ground in anticipation of the initation of development.
One of the landowners on Sector D was asked to meet with local groups to discuss the situation and while he agreed that the petanca courts on his land could remain in the short term, did stress that he would be clearing the ground ready for construction at some point which would require the removal of the facilities.
With this in mind, representatives of the Camposol D Community and Gardening Group, the Camposol Free Community Sports group, the Camposol 2025 group and the Camposol Business Association had a meeting with Mazarrón Mayor, Ginés Campillo, Mazarrón Councillor for Camposol, Carmen Navarro and Councillor for Sport, Maria Isabel Carrillo, on Thursday May 16.
The items discussed and agreed were:
- Council acceptence of the cultivated area known as the “Lone Garden” outside Calle Abedulas (designated Green Zone and council owned).
- Moving garden furniture from the D Sector Memorial Garden situated on private land C12 to the “Lone Garden”.
- Moving the D Sector hut situated on private land C12 to Zona Verde land controlled by the council opposite poligono D20, although the hut’s construction would have to be modified to comply with Zona Verde regulations.
- Transfering the 3 petanca courts currently on private land D30 to the council controlled sports area adjacent to the football pitch on Calle Nogales.
- The installation of 2 benches in the memory of Silvana Buxton, Councillor for Camposol who passed away in October 2023. At the suggestion of the Mayor these should be inside the sports designated area on Calle Nogales and the area adjacent to the childrens playground in Councillor Silvana Buxton Park.
The Mayor and Councillors also provided guidance on the documentation to be submitted to confirm the changes.
Pat Ridler, President of the Camposol D Community and Gardening Group, said, “We are extremely pleased with the outcome, in particular the ability to relocate our hut and memorial benches on D and create the new Petanca courts which will benefit the whole of Camposol.”
Stuart Clarke, spokesperson for the Camposol Free Community Sports group, said, “Very happy, a good example of collaboration with the Council, the CFCS got a 100% success in all of our requests.”
Alan Fleming, spokesman for the Camposol 2025 group, said, “I think the memorial benches for Silvana are a fitting reminder that she got the football pitch and the playground for Camposol and I’m sure Geoff (her husband) and the ‘Camposol Kids’ group will be delighted.”
Julie Townsend, President of the Camposol Business Association, added, “We were happy to support the groups today in their endeavours to save these facilities for the community.”
