ARCHIVED - Bando de la Huerta 2022 celebrated in style in Murcia city
The popular traditional celebration, the biggest day of the city’s week-long Spring Festival, was a roaring success yesterday

The Bando de la Huerta day that was celebrated in Murcia city yesterday, Tuesday April 19, packed the streets with costumed people after two years away because of the pandemic.
Thousands of people flooded squares and gardens in the city centre of Murcia to celebrate the big day of the Spring Fiestas, dressed in their finest traditional ‘Huertana’ clothing. Some decided to spend the day with their families, having picnics outdoors, while others partied with friends and drank in the streets.
The Silk Garden was one of the main family gathering points, with some families, eager to occupy the best places, arriving at the park in the early hours of the morning. The Jardin de la Pólvora also had a great family atmosphere, while the Plaza de las Flores was also crowded with revellers.
Meanwhile, the fairgrounds of La Fica hosted the ‘Zona Huertana Dance’ event, which was attended by thousands of youths who enjoyed sets by Spanish DJs. In addition, a foodtruck area was set up.

Throughout the event, which began at 11am and ended at around 8pm, trash bags were handed around and messages were sent out to raise awareness among attendees about not littering, how to separate waste correctly for recycling and the importance of protecting the environment.
In the Plaza de Toros, there was a concert Fenómenos Extraños, where more than 1,000 marineras (traditional Murcian tapas) were handed out with beers, all the proceeds of which will go to the Red Cross.
Police received 158 emergency calls during the Bando de la Huerta 2022 festival

There were four calls to the emergency services about people being run over in two separate traffic incidents, two people who went missing, two incidents of domestic abuse, nine reports relating to noise issues and one count of exhibitionism, as well as an abundance of traffic alerts.
