ARCHIVED - Training schemes for jobless people to help repair flood damage in Los Nietos and Los Urrutias
On-the-job training for the unemployed on the coast of the Mar Menor
The Town Hall of Cartagena has this week opened the registration period for its latest campaign within the scheme to provide on-the-job training for the unemployed in the field of urban maintenance, with activities focussed on the towns of Los Nietos and Los Urrutias on the coast of the Mar Menor.
In this way it is hoped that young people will not only be able to acquire skills and experience to help them find regular permanent employment, but will also contribute to repairing the damage done by the destructive flooding during the “gota fría” storm in mid-September, according to councillor Irene Ruiz.
The training courses will consist of theoretical instruction regarding work safety, construction, painting, plumbing and other fields, and practical work where the students put into practice what they have learnt in the towns where they live.
In Los Urrutias their tasks will be to repair the garden and terrace at the Local Social, to re-paint the library and the basketball court at the same location, to improve the plants and gardens in the Plaza de México and to spruce up the Jardín del Trovo and the Plaza del Navegante. In Los Nietos, meanwhile, the work to be done includes the repainting and repair of benches in the parks of Plaza del Ancla, Plaza del Pescador and Plaza de San Miguel, and to repair areas where paving slabs have been damaged in various streets.
Applications to join the ADLE scheme can be submitted from 4th to 14th October, and the course and practical work will last from 16th October until December. Those taking part will receive a daily grant of 10 euros to support them during their training, and at the end of the course they will be included in the council’s database as possible future employees.
