ARCHIVED - Sales will be allowed to go ahead in Spain even in phase zero areas
Last week there was considerable confusion over whether sales were allowed or not
After a week of uncertainty the government has finally decided to allow retailers to hold sales of seasonal stock, regardless of the size of their premises and in which phase of the de-escalation process their premises are located.
However, the Ministry of Health has specifically stated that “in the event of a large influx of people, these promotions must be immediately stopped if necessary".
Last week there was considerable confusion over the wording of text in the BOE published on May 9th, which stated that during phase 1, “establishments could not announce or carry out commercial actions that could lead to crowds, both within the commercial establishment and in its vicinity.” This restriction would not affect sales or promotions through websites.
During the week various representations were made relating to this topic and finally the government has decided to permit sales to go ahead in all retailers, regardless of size, the only provisor being that should this lead to crowding in the streets, then the sales would be stopped.
This also applies to retailers in phase zero who have been allowed to open from today.
It has been announced on Monday that teams of inspectors will be unleashed on the commerical centres of the Murcia region in order to ensure that retailers are complying with the rules and that shoppers are observing social distancing.
