ARCHIVED - Murcia government raises gota fría storm damage estimate to 590 million euros
Renewed calls for national government aid in the wake of the worst flooding in Murcia for 50 years
Three weeks after the destructive gota fría storm of mid-September arrived in the Region of Murcia, the regional government has raised its estimate of the cost of flood damage to almost 600 million euros, including the losses incurred by agriculturalists, cattle farmers and fish farms as well as those suffered in terms of public infrastructures and privately owned property.
Aemet have confirmed that in terms of the amount of rain which fell between 12th and 15th September this gota fría was the severest in Murcia of the last 50 years, and by the end of the month the government’s calculations had reached the surprisingly exact total of 590,774,720 euros, an amount which makes “exceptional aid” from the national government an absolute necessity, according to Murcia government spokesperson Ana Martínez Vidal.
Sra Martínez added that the regional authorities managed the emergency “brilliantly”, taking charge of the situation with the staff and materials at its disposal, and that now “the State must assume its responsibilities and establish a line of subsidies to compensate for all of the losses”.
According to Ana Martínez, the insurance compensation consortium which is administering the claims made as a result of the flooding has described the recent episode in Murcia as “the biggest flooding catastrophe in Spain”, with approximately 12,000 homes and 5,000 motor vehicles having suffered damage.
Within the government’s total of 590 million euros, 237.7 million relate to privately owned property, 144.8 million to damage in public facilities, 101.8 million to agriculture, 60 million to State-owned infrastructures and 46.5 million to publicly owned buildings. The figure for agriculture is reached after 1,720 reports of damage have been received, with a total of 113,384 hectares of land affected and the losses distributed among production infrastructures (52.5 million euros), crops (23.3 million) and fish farming (25 million).
