ARCHIVED - Los Alcázares looks like Venice as floodwaters fill the streets once again
100 litres per square metre hits the campo de Cartagena
Yet again the Gota Fría floods the centre of Los Alcázares.
Heavy rains fell directly over the municipality last night, but although the rain stopped at around 2am without causing too many problems, as dawn broke water was pouring down into the centre of the town yet again from the Campo de Cartagena, carrying mud and debris from the surrounding countryside as the water sought the easiest route downhill, pouring straight down the ramblas and across agricultural fields towards the Mar Menor.
Around 100 people have been evacuated from the streets of Joaquín Blume, Los Luisos, Doctor García Guillén, Miguel Hernández, Adelfas, Girona, Granada, Barcelona, Valencia, and calle Ourense, and the main central shopping and residential areas of the old town are once again completely under water, the same areas that were hit so hard in September.
Schools in the municipality remain closed today, along with the weekly street market which normally takes place on a Tuesday.
The orange alert for the Campo de Cartagena, the Guadalentín Valley, Mazarrón, Lorca and Águilas, all of which were predicted to receive an accumulation of 100 litres per square metre throughout the period between midnight on Tuesday and midnight on Wednesday has now been downgraded.
Only coastal areas remain on orange alert for strong winds and waves (coastal phenomena).
Elsewhere, the storm is now abating.
