Total 2639 . Acumulated IA rate in the last 7 days: 176
Fatalities:
There was one further fatality reported on Monday; a 91 year old female from Totana, bringing the total number of deaths to date up to 222.
Hospitalisations:
This data is the most carefully observed as although the number of cases continues to rise, many of these are exhibiting mild symptoms or are asymptomatic, the number of those hospitalised with more severe cases reflecting the pressure on the health system at any given point. At the moment 332 patients are hospitalised (7 more in the last 24 hours) with more severe symptoms, 72 of which are in intensive care. This leaves 8,098 people in home isolation with mild symptoms.
Recoveries:
Although 342 patients have been given the all-clear during the last 24 hours, the total of new cases is higher than the recoveries, bringing the total active cases up to 8,430, and the number of those recovered has now risen to 12,477.
Testing and accumulated incidence:
During the last 24 hours the regional health service has carried out 2,738 coronavirus PCR tests, giving 14.13% positivity. This is higher than all of last week and is higher than the 5% recommended by the WHO, which deems anything above that level as being “community transmission”, ie the virus is spreading through the population at a generalised level, rather than in specific outbreaks.
The region now has an accumulated incidence level of 176.7 per 100,000 residents over a 7 day period, and a level of 393 per 100,000 over a 14 day period. Both figures have fallen from last week, when there was a de-celeration in the rate of new cases detected.
Although the figures are still way too high for comfort, there has been a slight downward movement in the number of new cases detected in the last few days.
Lorca: Virgen del Alcázar hospital
Lorca is still proving a real problem and the centre of the city has been in confinement for three weeks now, yet is still generating a steady succession of new cases. Unfortunately, hopes that the city would be able to leave confinement were dashed over the weekend due to a major outbreak in the Virgen del Alcázar hospital, as a result of which, the city centre must remain in confinement for at least another week.
The outbreak is in a private hospital, and as of Monday, implicates 63 cases; 43 are patients, 15 hospital staff, and five members of the public visiting or accompanying the patients. Two of the patients on the covid wards of the hospital have been transferred from the Rafael Méndez public hospital which is at capacity.
The remaining patients, staff and anyone who has visited patients within the last few days, will be PCR tested and where appropriate, isolated.
Lorca, Totana and Jumilla will remain in confinement for a further week.
Schoolchildren in the outlying districts of Lorca are being allowed to return to school this week. Schoolchildren in Jumilla will be allowed to return to school from Thursday 8th October.
140 teachers and 1783 school children in isolation
A total of 140 teachers and 1,783 students in the region remain in quarantine at home due to having had contact with one of the 250 people -11 teachers and 239 students- who have tested positive for Covid-19 in 140 educational centers in the Community since the beginning of the school term on Monday, September 14th.
There are currently 280,000 students and 27,000 teachers in the Region, so the 140 isolated teachers represent 0.51% of the total, and the 1,783 students, 0.63%. A total of 216 students and 51 teachers have already returned to classrooms after completing the mandatory quarantine period without developing symptoms.
In the last hours there have been 5 new incidences of pupils giving a positive covid result;
The Los Antolinos public school (San Pedro del Pinatar) has registered 1 positive student, so 18 people will be isolated: the positive pupil, 16 further students and 1 teacher (Nursery Classroom)
The San Cayetano Public School (Torre Pacheco) has registered 1 positive student, and in this case the positive and 1 other student will be isolated.
The San Isidoro y Santa Florentina Public School (Cartagena) has 1 new positive student, leadig to 5 isolations: the positive and 4 other students,
The Susarte concerted school (Las Torres de Cotillas) has 1 positive teacher who will be isolated along with 2 students; and the IES Vicente Medina (Archena) has 1 positive student who will isolate along with 3 other students.
