ARCHIVED - Coronavirus cases in Spain rise by 12,423 on Thursday with 126 deaths
ICU occupancy by patients with covid-19 increases to 18%
The Spanish Ministry of Health reported 12,423 new cases on Thursday, bringing the total number of people affected by coronavirus since the start of the pandemic to 848,324.
5,585 cases were diagnosed within the last 24 hours, 510 less than in the previous day.
Fatalities
126 deaths were reported on Thursday, bringing the total for the last 7 days to 421 and the total number of fatalities since March to 32,688.
IA rate
The number of positive cases reported within the last fourteen days per 100,000 inhabitants decreased for the second consecutive day, falling 257 to 256. This is a mininal decrease, but is the lowest IA rate registered in Spain since September 18th.
However, it is still the highest in Europe.
"Eleven of the 17 regions are showing a stable or downward evolution," said the director of the Center for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies (CCAES) of the Ministry of Health, Fernando Simón, in his presentation, emphasising that there is a significant variation between the regions.
For example, the Canary Islands has an IA rate of 95.9, while Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria and the Valencian Community have just over one hundred cases per 100,000. But on the other side of the scale are the Community of Madrid (563.86) and, above all, Navarra (655.90 positive). These two regions are the two principal sources of concern for Simón, who pointed out that three out of ten infections in the last three weeks have occurred in the Madrid Region. However, he acknowledged that Madrid is "evolving well", but still remains at one of the highest rates in Europe.
Hospitalisations:
Patients admitted for covid-19 in Spanish hospitals account for 8.97% of conventional hospital beds, although decreased from 10,662 to 10,645 this Thursday, 17 patients less.
The numbers in intensive care units went from 1,568 to 1,585. 18.4% of these types of beds are occupied by patients with coronavirus, Madrid having the highest number: four out of ten ICU patients in Madrid have covid-19. Dr. Simón indicated that he was also concerned about the situation of the two Castiles, with 25% in Castilla-La Mancha and 31.90% in Castilla y León. Madrid also has the highest occupancy of standard beds with 21.10% occupied by covid patients.
Regarding outbreaks, the CCAES reported in the last week, 1,068 outbreaks have been detected, accounting for 8,700 people. The outbreaks remain small and in eight out of ten outbreaks, no more than ten cases have been detected.
The outbreaks with the highest number of cases, some with more than 100 patients, continue to occur among workers in vulnerable situations. Of the outbreaks reported in the last week, the area in which the greatest number of outbreaks and cases was recorded continues to be outbreaks of social origin, which accounts for 23.8% of outbreaks and 23.1% of cases. Outbreaks related to family and friends gatherings (204 outbreaks and 1,347 cases) are also significant.
