ARCHIVED - Cartagena requests 5 million from EU for new bike lanes
The Murcia municipality also plans to create two new car parks with electric vehicle charging points

The Cartagena City Council has once again approached Brussels for a cash injection, this time requesting 5 million euros from Next Generation funds to build around 10 more kilometres of bike lanes and two car parks with spaces for 820 vehicles. The entire project is set to cost a staggering 6 million, with the other million euros coming from the 2024 municipal budget.
Spain is the second largest recipient of Next Generation funds after Italy, having been promised 72 billion in transfers and another 68 billion in loans. Of this, 15% has been allocated by the Spanish government to the creation of resilient infrastructures, and Cartagena believes the 6-million-euro bike lane budget aligns with the EU’s drive towards more sustainable mobility.
“These are mobility projects that better connect Cartagena with its neighbourhoods and they represent mobility alternatives that reduce pollution and also family spending, something that is especially important at this time of high energy prices,” Cartagena mayor Noelia Arroyo said.
One of the proposed bike lanes, between Santa Ana and El Albujón, will cost one million euros alone.
The plan also includes a budget of 1,600,000 euros to build two new car parks: one in Plaza de Severo Ochoa will have 120 spaces and another near the Eroski supermarket will have 700. Combined, they’ll occupy 21,000 square metres of land and the regional authorities intend to install solar pergolas and charging points for electric vehicles and spaces to park smart bikes.
The City Council has included a 270,000 euro project to further modernise municipal public transport by creating smart canopies with the aim of improving information for urban bus users.
The entire project has been handed over to CartaGo, which has already earned 4 million euros through various sustainable mobility works in Cartagena, including the Espacio Algameca, the connection of the UCAM and the installation of 18 intelligent pedestrian crossings.
