ARCHIVED - 30 more Algerian migrants picked up off the coast of Cartagena
Two boats were intercepted close to Cabo de Palos and Calblanque
The weather is becoming more autumnal and sea conditions in the Mediterranean look likely to become far rougher over the next couple of days as another potential “gota fría” storm approaches the eastern coast of Spain, but the flow of migrants attempting to enter EU territory via the coastline of Murcia continued on Thursday night with another two small boats intercepted off the coast of Cartagena.
By the end of September 619 unauthorized migrants had been apprehended in the Region of Murcia either before reaching land or shortly afterwards, and that figure has continued to rise sharply during October. The boats intercepted on Thursday evening were carrying 30 Algerians, 12 of them onboard a tiny boat which was spotted three miles from Cabo de Palos and the other 18 just one mile south of the beaches of Calblanque.
All 30 were taken to the police station in Cartagena and deportation procedures will begin in due course.
