ARCHIVED - 18 abandoned boats removed from Caravanning La Manga beach
The works are being surpervised by an archaeologist due to the proximity of the Castillico archaeological site
The Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and the Environment, and General Directorate of the Mar Menor, have begun the work of removing 18 boats in different states of deterioration and abandonment, located near to the beach of the camping Caravaning La Manga within the Mar Menor.
Boats that are salvageable and have registrations will be transferred to a municipal deposit provided by the City of Cartagena and the remaining materials scrapped, recycled or disposed of.
The boats are either stranded on the beach, half buried or wallowing very close to the shore in shallow waters, while the scattered remains of other boats are also making the area unsafe as a result of the “strong weather events” that have affected the Mar Menor in the last year: "the objective is to free up the bathing area and prevent remains of the boats from dispersing throughout the area causing possible contamination of the coastal and marine environment of the Mar Menor"said general director of the Mar Menor, Miriam Pérez, who went to talk to operatives undertaking the project on Friday morning.
The works are being carried out in co-ordination with the Maritime Captaincy and Cartagena Council, under the supervision of an archaeologist, given the proximity of the archaeological site of 'El Castillico'.
This initiative is part of the emergency works for the removal of plant biomass and debris from the Mar Menor carried out by the regional government this spring.
