ARCHIVED - Archena joins major Spanish cities issuing fines for throwing gloves and masks on the floor
The local Archena police will issue fines of between € 600 and € 2,500
On May 21st, the Spanish Government made face masks compulsory for everyone over 6 years of age, unable to apply 2 metres of social distancing in a public area, increasing the demand for disposable masks by millions a week across Spain.
Although the top priority of the authorities is saving lives and minimising the spread of the virus, this obligation has however, brought with it a major problem that can facilitate the spread of the virus; the accumulation of used masks and gloves on the floor and an environmental problem that can only grow, as humans fail to correctly dispose of used masks, throwing them on beaches, into rivers and on the floor in streets and the open countryside.
Across the country local councils are starting to include sanctions for incorrect disposal of masks and gloves in local byelaws and impose fines for non-compliance.
Toledo has established sanctions ranging from between 150 and 3,000 euros; Cádiz will fine those who violate the law between 100 and 750 euros; Burgos is issuing fines of up to 600 euros and here in the Murcia region, Archena has taken the decision to join their ranks, with penalties of between € 600 and € 1,200, if the infringement is considered serious, or between € 1,201 and € 2,500, if it is considered to be very serious.
Mayoress of Archena, Patricia Fernández López, has ordered the local police to intensify surveillance efforts in the main transit areas for people in the municipality. “We are going to intensify surveillance in the municipality to sanction the incipient and irresponsible behaviour of those who do not keep social distancing measures, and those who also decide to throw their masks and used gloves on the ground, with the consequent danger of contagion for the citizens and floors of the municipality, ”she said.
However, the bitter taste of the medicine also yields positive benefits, as the council is distributing 70,000 masks free within the municipality, volunteers handing out masks to those out exercising in public areas without one in “choques”, or a group activity, as well as in the most transited streets of the urban area.
In addition, the council has been running a programme of activities (Archena respira...breathe Archena) to draw the residents out of their homes and out into the open spaces of the municipality to exercise and the local agricultural sector has worked with the council throughout the crisis to spray public areas using agricultural machinery.
Worldwide, masks and gloves are already starting to wash up on beaches and riverbanks endangering marine and wildlife…………
