ARCHIVED - Amazing make-up for the Suelta de la Mussona in Águilas
Stunning images from the Federation of the peñas showing how this extraordinary make-up is applied
The Carnival festivities in Águilas, the largest and most spectacular in the Region of Murcia, are now moving up into top gear following the release of the “Mussona” on the Explanada of the Castillo de San Juan on Thursday evening.
The Mussona is a hissing, spitting beast wearing a costume created from natural materials, and is let loose every year along with its handler before it makes its way down to the Plaza de Espana, where the official ceremony to begin the Carnival begins.
In essence the Mussona represents the dual nature of man, as both something the wild beast within and the civilized being man seen from outside, and is a way of expressing the battle between order and chaos, which for many is basically what Carnival is all about. However, for others, the festivities are a chance to admire the outlandish and spectacular costumes which will be in evidence in Águilas over the next few days, and to enjoy the street parades and party atmosphere at the start of Lent!
The images shown are from the Federación de Peñas del Carnaval de Águilas and show the incredible amount of work and skill creating this extraordinary costume and applying the make-up worn by the Mussona.
It's an amazing work of art, but is all over within a couple of hours as the Mussona descends into the town below, hissing and attacking spectators.........the beast within.
