Alicante police revive unconscious German tourist after medical emergency on bus
The 64-year-old stopped breathing and had no pulse before Costa Blanca officers used a defibrillator and CPR to revive him
A German tourist is recovering after police officers and paramedics helped save his life when he suffered a medical emergency on a bus in Alicante.
The incident happened during the afternoon of June 12 when National Police officers spotted a Local Police patrol attending a bus in the city centre. The bus driver had already begun evacuating passengers after a man suddenly lost consciousness on board.
When officers reached the vehicle, they found two Local Police officers performing CPR on a 64-year-old German man who was lying unresponsive on the floor of the bus.
According to police, the tourist was not breathing and had no pulse, prompting officers to launch an urgent effort to revive him. National Police officers immediately requested a defibrillator from Alicante's Provincial Police Station, which was located nearby.
The device recommended three electric shocks, which were administered alongside continuous CPR carried out by the officers. Medical crews arrived shortly afterwards and joined the resuscitation efforts. After around eight minutes of CPR, the man began breathing again and regained a pulse.
A SAMU emergency medical team then took over treatment at the scene. Although the tourist's vital signs had returned, his condition remained critical and paramedics continued working to stabilise him before transferring him to Alicante General Hospital's intensive care unit.
Days after the incident, with the tourist recovering in hospital, the officers involved visited him and his wife, who thanked them personally for their swift actions.
Police officials highlighted the importance of regular training in CPR and the use of defibrillators, explaining that officers receive ongoing instruction throughout their careers to prepare them for situations where every second can make a difference.
In this case, that training, combined with a rapid response from both police forces and medical teams, proved crucial in saving the man's life.
