ARCHIVED - Aemet maintain rain and wind alerts in Murcia as the gota fría storm recedes
Residents of Los Alcázares return to their homes to begin clearing up after another flood
Despite more rain falling in various parts of the Region of Murcia on Tuesday afternoon it appears that the worst of the second “gota fría” storm of the autumn is now over, and that the rain will gradually ease off by Wednesday afternoon.
In Los Alcázares only a dozen or so people are still being prevented from returning to their homes after being evacuated as the floodwater rose during the morning, and Fernando López Miras, the president of the regional government, reports that although there has been considerable damage and various roads in the Campo de Cartagena remain closed the flooding cannot even be compared to the disaster of the previous gota fría in September.
However, as people begin to take stock of the events of the last 24 hours there are disturbing images showing that the Mar Menor has once again turned brown along the inland shore due the runoff of large quantities of water containing soil and harmful fertilizers from the crop fields of the Campo de Cartagena.
Nonetheless, Aemet maintain their yellow alerts for possible heavy rain in the Campo de Cartagena and Mazarrón and for strong winds in the north as well as an orange alert for wind and high waves on the coast, although by Wednesday morning the only remaining alert (as things stand at 17.00 on Tuesday) will be downgraded to yellow for rough seas and strong winds along the Mediterranean coastline.
