ARCHIVED - 8,000 euros for naturalists attempting to reactivate old salt flats alongside the Mar Menor
The salt pans of Marchamalo are a perfect habitat for various wading birds including flamingos
The naturalists’ association of ANSE, who campaign tirelessly to protect the natural environment in the Region of Murcia and other parts of south-eastern Spain, report that they have received donations of approximately 8,000 euros towards their objective of reactivating a small part of the abandoned salt flats of Marchamalo at the southern end of the Mar Menor.
Around 7,000 square metres of land were acquired by ANSE last autumn, including the remains of an old salt production building, at a cost of 70,000 euros, at which point a campaign was launched to raise funds in order to beginning to produce salt in the area again. This activity would be 100 per cent compatible with the bio-diversity of this part of the Mar Menor coastline, and discussions are being held with the regional government about the project as both parties seek to promote the recovery of the marine environment in the lagoon.
The old salt flats of Marchamalo are a protected area on a number of levels, as a Protected Natural Area, a Site of Community Importance, a Birdlife Protection Zone, a Zone of Special Interest in the Mediterranean and a recognized wetland under the conditions of Ramsar.
In all the salt flats occupy an area of almost two million square metres, while the area including the beach of Playa Amoladeras and the dunes behind it (alongside the shore of the Mediterranean) accounts for another 116,000m2. Both are home to various wildlife species including flamingos, Andouin’s gulls, egret herons, black-winged stilts, avocets and plovers, while the plant species native to the dunes of Las Amoladeras are also an important element of the local biosystem, including Pancratium maritimum (sea daffodils) and Eryngium maritimum (sea holly).
When some of the old salt pans are eventually operational they will provide a habitat for wading birds and the Spanish toothcarp, a small fish which is at risk of extinction.
