ARCHIVED - 7th December, dramatized guided tour of Totana, “Feudo de la Orden de Santiago”
A knight of the Order of Santiago guides visitors around the historic monuments of Totana
This dramatized historical visit in Totana features a knight of the religious and military Order of Santiago accompanying participants on a walk around some of the most important historical monuments in the town, including the church of Santiago, the fountain of Juan de Uzeta and the ancient oven known as an “horno moruno”. During the tour other characters appear to tell their own stories related to local history and ethnography.
The Order of Santiago was founded in the 12th century, when the thirteen founder knights pledged to protect travelling pilgrims on the way to Santiago de Compostela, and was accepted by the Pope in 1175. Over the following centuries the organization held great power and vast tracts of land in Spain including two cities, 178 boroughs and settlements.
They arrived in what is now the Region of Murcia with the Reconquista of the area from the Moors in 1243 and were subsequently awarded control over numerous towns including Pliego, Cehegín, Fortuna, Lorquí, Caravaca and Bullas. In Aledo and Totana their administration also began in the 13th century, and the Order’s land was not returned to public ownership until the 19th century.
The tour on 7th December is conducted in Spanish and begins at 10.30 at the Totana tourist office in Plaza de la Balsa Vieja. The fee for joining is 10 euros for adults and 7 euros for children and prior registration is essential as places are limited: further information is available from the tourist office (telephone 968 418153, email turismo@totana.es).
