ARCHIVED - 60 to 65 year olds in Valencia region to receive second dose of AstraZeneca
The aim is to fully immunise this age group in the provinces of Alicante, Valencia and Castellon next week.
People aged 60 to 65 in the Valencia region on the Costa Blanca will receive the second dose of AstraZeneca vaccine from next week.
For many, who received their first jab 12 weeks ago, the news will come as a relief after thousands saw their appointments rescheduled and put back earlier this month.
Spain received half a million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine on Tuesday, June 22, of which 50,000 will be distributed across the Valencia region and added to the stock of 420,700 doses, along with the Oxford alternative, to ensure 60 to 65-year-olds and under 60s in "essential groups", such as teachers and police officers, can be fully immunised.
More than 160,000 vials of Pfizer arrived in the region on Monday, June 21 - the first of two weekly deliveries throughout June - making it the most widely used across the three provinces.
While supplies of the Janssen vaccine continue to lag behind due to problems with one of the Johnson & Johnson factories, which the Ministry of Health clams "is not fulfilling its commitment".
The manufacturer had promised that 3.7 million doses would arrive in Spain in June, of which approximately 10 per cent would be distributed to the Valencian region.
But so far this month, less than half, around 1.5 million Janssen doses, have been shipped to Spain.
Despite minor setbacks in the vaccination roll-out campaign, the incidence rate in the Valencia region remains amongst the lowest in the country, and daily Covid admissions have reached a new low.
