ARCHIVED - 40-year-old with Covid dies two weeks after caesarean birth in Murcia
The victim had an induced birth in Cartagena hospital before being taken into intensive care in Murcia
A 40-year-old woman, who gave birth two weeks ago, has died in the Region of Murcia after being admitted into intensive care with Covid-19.
Medical professionals at the Santa Lucía Hospital in Cartagena had to induce the birth of the baby, who tested positive for the virus and was taken to the Neonatology department. The mother was taken to the intensive care unit in the Virgen de la Arrixaca Hospital in Murcia.
She was hooked up to an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) machine, which substitutes lung functions and oxygenates the blood, but she didn’t survive and sadly died on Tuesday morning (July 27).
This isn’t the only case of Covid-19 complicating a pregnancy in Murcia and there is currently a 29-year-old new mother in the ICU at the Virgen de la Arrixaca Hospital.
This woman, from the municipality of San Javier, also required an induced birth via caesarean at the Santa Lucía Hospital and was later taken to la Arrixaca Hospital in Murcia to be treated for "serious problems" derived from coronavirus.
However, sources from the hospital have said that the 29-year-old’s health is “improving”.
According to recent studies, pregnant women constitute a high-risk group for Covid, as the virus can increase the chances of complications, such as premature birth, by 50 per cent.
Due to the recent surge in Covid cases and hospital admissions, several paediatricians have encouraged any pregnant women who have not yet been vaccinated to do so as soon as possible.
