ARCHIVED - 34 covid deaths in Murcia over the weekend but new cases lower
A total of 2,589 new cases were diagnosed over the weekend
This weekend the coronavirus situation in the Region of Murcia remained critical, with 34 covid deaths over the 2-day period and 2,589 new cases diagnosed. Although the number of new cases was lower than during the week, this is still a significant number of new diagnoses, although the principal concern for the regional health service is the increasing pressure on the hospital system and inevitable increase in deaths as the high volume of cases notified immediately after the festive break when tighter restrictions were first imposed, feeds through the system.
On Saturday 18 deaths were reported and 16 on Sunday, bringing the total `number of fatalities to date in the region up to 921, the age range of the deceased between 50 and 100.
Active cases: the total number of active cases has fallen over the weekend due to the fact that more people have recovered than were diagnosed as new cases, which is a positive indication that the rate of infections may be slowing down. The total of active cases is now 17,401 and the total of patients recovered 70,997.
Hospitalisations: The principal problem facing the regional authorities is the number of patients requiring hospital treatment for more severe cases of coronavirus and this is causing significant problems for the health service as every single intensive care bed in the region is full and although other wards are being opened to cope with the overflow, patients transferred to different areas of the region and other facilities adapted to cope with intensive care patients there is a limit to the amount of respiratory equipment available and the number of intensive care staff available.
The regional health authority has ordered additional respiratory equipment, but the facilities within the region are so severely strained at the moment that an emergency meeting of the covid monitoring Committee on Saturday took the decision to stop all non-urgent procedures and actions within the health service to focus exclusively on handling covid patients. Staff from surgical departments will now be re-directed to covid wards and all resources possible re-aligned to cope with the current situation.
There are now 1.068 covid patients in the hospitals of the region and 155 in intensive care, a level which is causing complications for the health service.
There are also 16,333 patients who have been given a positive diagnosis and are isolating at home, some of whom may require hospital treatment should their symptoms worsen.
