Click HereThe Carnival celebrations in Santiago de la Ribera, in the municipality of San Javier, are among the noisiest and most colourful in the Region of Murcia to celebrate the beginning of Lent (40 days before Easter), and this year the party includes a series of activities, concluding with the Grand Carnival parade itself.
This year Carnival begins on Saturday 22nd February with the gala to choose the Queen of the Carnival, and comes to an end on Sunday 1st March with the grand parade. This is traditionally the last main Carnival parade in the Region, and the aim is to attract as many peñas (Carnival troupes) as possible from other areas for just one more quiver of that feather boa before it’s down to Lent and, supposedly, 40 days of abstinence.
Most of the events are focused around the large marquee set up in the Jardines Príncipe de Asturias, alongside the Barnuevo Explanada in Santiago de la Ribera, and although many of them are for the peñas participating in the Carnival, other events are open to anyone who wants to come along. The whole celebration culminates in the grand parade, which is always a hugely popular event for expats and visitors to the municipality as well as those who live in San Javier and Santiago de la Ribera.
The core events of the 2020 Santiago de la Ribera Carnival are as follows:
Saturday 22nd February
23.00: Grand gala to elect the Carnival queen for 2020 in the festival marquee in the Jardines Príncipe de Asturias.
Sunday 23rd February
12.00 midday: the Carnaval Canino, Carnival for the canine population, including a dog beauty show, an award for the dog with the best bling, most participative carnival dog, and various other events. The canine Carnival takes place on the Explanada Barnuevo, on the seafront in Santiago de la Ribera.

22.00: Masks night as Santiago de la Ribera prepares for its big Carnival day on Sunday.
23.00: Grand Drag Queen gala in the main marquee alongside the Jardines Príncipe de Asturias. DJ and dancing. Prizes for the best-dressed individuals and couples and many other fun competitions and contests.
Sunday 1st March
16.00: An hour after the participating peñas gather to prepare, the Grand Carnival Parade of Santiago de la Ribera 2020 starts by the seafront before heading towards the aviation roundabout. It's always very popular with spectators, and also photographers, as the light is good at this time of day! Following the parade, as is to be expected, another big party begins back at the marquee.
